After two weeks…

Posted by Cynthia

It has now been just over two weeks of full-time living in the motorhome. The transition has been effortless for the most part, but there are a few things that we are still getting used to.

The coach came with a combination washer/dryer. In theory it is great to have, but the load size is tiny, it uses a lot of water, and it takes a good long time to get things fully dry. The instruction manual says to take things out when still wet, shake and fold them, then stick back in to finish drying. This seems to keep the wrinkles down, but things like jeans can take more than ninety minutes, and are still damp inside the folds. Not a big deal since we both have plenty of clothes, but is something that we need to get used to:)

I am very comfortable cooking in my little kitchen. I have plenty of cupboard space, and once I remember where I stowed everything, it is not much different cooking in our tiny RV kitchen than any “normal” kitchen. We actually have one convenience that we have not had before–the combination convection oven/microwave. It is a microwave, a convection oven, or it can combine the two for a “fast cooking” option. We have used it as a convection oven, and it seems to work just fine for everything from baked potatoes to bar cookies. I am not sure how or why to use the fast cook setting, so we have not tried that yet.

Currently we have the convenience of using the dishwasher in the house that we are renovating, so the hardest part about washing dishes is carrying them to and from the house. We did purchase a small countertop dishwasher for the coach, but it does not hold very much. That will be a new challenge–fitting all of our dinner dishes into one dishwasher load!! I decided early on that I did not want to eat off of paper plates with plastic silverware just because we were living in an RV. I bought a set of melamine dishes and acrylic cups that have so far worked nicely. We will just have to conserve a little, and not let the dishes pile up–just like the laundry!!

The new roof was put on. After tearing off the old roof, the house still had the original sheeting and it was badly cracked and rotted in places, so new roof sheeting was laid down and then all new materials laid down from there. Makes a huge difference, and no more leaks inside!

The First Nine Days…

Posted by Cynthia

After two years of preparing and planning, we have now been living full-time in our RV for nine days. We still have several boxes that we have no room to unpack, as well as a few “need to go through” boxes. And we have some frozen food in the freezer of the house we are parked in front of. The transition from a large house freezer, plus a backup in the garage, to a small RV freezer will be tough for us. We like buying in bulk at Costco and the Grocery Outlet, and we both love our desserts!! So we are eating up the extra, and will then know exactly what we can have at any one time.
So what has the first week been like? Very smooth, actually. Since we are parked on our own property, we have been able to let the cats roam around freely. They have gotten used to the motorhome since it has been parked by their house for two years, and they are comfortable in it. After the second day, they were coming in and out of the motorhome just like they did at the house. Obviously they cannot do this everywhere we will be, but we were happy to see that they adapted to the move very quickly.
The way we are parked at this house, we cannot put out the bedroom slide, so it is a bit of a squeeze back there. We installed a row of closet-organizer dressers, and the bed touches them when it is all the way in, so the only way to the closet or the far side of the bed is climbing over it, and I cannot get into the middle dresser drawers, only the top and the bottom. It has not been a big problem, but it has been an inconvenience.
Well, that’s enough for now. More to come on our first few days of full-timing!!

Bathroom gut job

Posted by Kevin

Hoping that a total tear out of the bathroom would not have been necessary, but it is pretty much gutted now. After ripping off 3 layers of flooring, we found the floor boards around the toilet to be completely rotten, you could squeeze them like a sponge and water would run out. Cut out most of the rotted boards and one cross member is pretty bad also, so that will need to be replaced. Will be nice when done.

Parked At Rental

Well technically we are now Fulltimers!

The renters in our rental home moved out a month earlier than planned, so we had a decision to make, do we keep trying to sell our house “For Sale by Owner” and have an empty rental sitting 2 hours away? (An empty rental that needs ALOT of work) or do we hand off our house to a realtor and move over to Seattle and start working on that house to get it fixed up and sold?

Well we decided we wanted to get to work on the rental house, so we finished shoe-horning the rest of our belongings into the coach, and headed to Seattle. We are now parked along side our rental house. We have been here 3 days, and have been making alot of contacts for numerous bids on many needed repairs.

I spent the afternoon digging in the backyard to find the main line sewer clean out. I found it and will use that to dump the tanks. I need to sanitize the water system, so we haven’t used that yet. With help from my brother, we converted the power coming out of the dryer receptacle to be usable for the RV, so we have a 30 amp hook-up. Now I know some people say never plug into a dryer outlet, which is true, but we basically rewired it to use only one of the hot feeds, so we have 120-volt 30 amp power. Now technically this power still isn’t perfect, it has an open Ground, but my house is old and none of the circuits are grounded except for a GFCI in the kitchen and bathroom.

So we are living in our coach fulltime, even though its parked along side a house.
