Hardwood Floors: Done

Posted by Cynthia

floor3.JPG floor2.JPG floor1.JPG

and when we got back, we were finally able to get into the house. We had tiptoed in and opened some windows this morning, but the fumes prevented us from doing anything else. Plus the finish seemed just a tiny bit tacky. I took some pictures of the dining room, living room, and hallway. Should really look great once we get the doors and mouldings installed!!

We were finally able to get into the bathroom to get the second coat of paint on the walls in there. We don’t have much light in the bathroom yet, so it may need some touch-ups, but otherwise it is painted. The plumber is coming tomorrow evening to finish the shower, install the toilet, the vanity, and the lighting…it will be close to done in there, too. I can’t wait to post some befores and afters of the rooms as they are completed!!!

Pike Place Market

So we have both lived in Seattle before, and have been to Pike Place Market many times, but it has been awhile, and I wanted to go at least once while we were here this time. Today was the perfect day because there was no one scheduled to do any work at the house, and the floors really needed time to dry. It was a gorgeous day, and even though it was a Wednesday it was quite busy at the market. It took us about twenty minutes just to find parking. Then we walked down to the market and got some lunch from the chicken place. We walked around and looked at the booths, bought some potatoes and some herbs from one place, and some honey from another. They have a lot of these decorated pig statues all over the area near the market, so I took pictures of some of them. I like pigs:) We walked around a little more and then went to the fudge shop and bought some fudge. We were done with the shopping by then, so we headed home…

Floor: Sanded and Prepped

Posted by Kevin

sanded.JPG sawdust.JPG floor.JPG

So they came and sanded the floors yesterday. It took all day–about nine hours to:

Sand off the old linoleum in the dining room

Sand down the rest of the floor to bare wood. They had to do under the fireplace by hand so picture 1 is the main part of the floor sanded, before they started on the hand-sanding of the edges and the fireplace.

Spread wood filler over the whole floor to fill in the gaps and the nail and staple holes.

Do a final sanding to make the whole floor perfectly smooth.

Vaccuum up all of the dust and debris. Picture 2 is one of three bags of dust they removed from the floor.

Lay out the first coat of varnish. We chose a natural finish for the floor because the color of the wood is amazing–and it brightens the whole house. The third picture shows the living room/dining room after the first day of work with one coat of varnish.

A quick post to show what we got done today. The laundry area is basically done–just needs doors. The lights are all up and working. We got everything on our list done for today except sanding the kitchen cabinets–we ended up getting our carpet ordered instead. It is so humid here (like 75%), that the first coat of paint in the bathroom took all day to dry, so the second coat will go on tomorrow.

House Update

Posted by Cynthia

Much has been done since we last updated. The entire house has been textured and painted (except the bathroom, which we will do ourselves) from the ceiling down. The floor tile is in and grouted in the bathroom, the laundry closet, the entry, and the kitchen. The gutters have been installed, and look great–much better than the 60 year-old wood gutters that had weeds growing in them. We have purchased and installed new (inexpensive) light fixtures in the hall, living area, and small bedroom-the ones in the two other bedrooms work and are not that old, so we are keeping them. We have started to paint and install the moulding in the areas that don’t have hardwood.

Projects for tomorrow: we bought new electrical outlets, switches, and covers for the whole house that we can start installing, the bathroom will be painted, and the bottom cabinets in the kitchen will be sanded and preped for painting. We have to pick up one more light fixture, and exchange another one that won’t work.

Someone is coming to refinish the hardwood floors on Monday(the last job we got a professional to do–the rest is all stuff we can do ourselves), so we will be kicked out for at least two days. If the weather is nice, we can finish up the outside–if not, we won’t do much those two days…maybe Pike Place Market:)

Deception Falls

Falls

Click for Google Map

Today we made a trip back to Wenatchee to get mail and check on our house, so we made a quick stop at Deception Falls. It is a small roadside picnic/rest area(with outhouses–yuck!!) just off highway 2, about halfway between Skykomish and Stevens Pass Ski Area. We have driven that road many times, but have never stopped there before. The highway actually goes over the falls, so it is a very short walk down the path to see it. There are other trails leading down to the river and beyond, but we did not take any of those–we weren’t really dressed for a hike. We got to use my new camera to take the pictures:) You can click the above picture to go to the photo gallery to see the rest of the pictures we took.

We then continued on to Wenatchee to check the house–we pulled some weeds, reset the sprinkler system, and picked up a few things we thought we might need. We picked up a bunch of mail Kevin’s Mom has been collecting for us, had some lunch at Applebee’s, made a quick stop at JCPenny’s, then headed home. Normally the trip takes about 2 1/2 hours, but since it was a Sunday evening in July, it took us a whole hour longer. The traffic was stop-and-go for MILES. I guess we will know better next time…

Chimney and Tile

Posted by Cynthia

Chimney Chimny ShowerTile ;BathFloor"

Here are a few pictures of what has been going on in the house during the last week. The Chimney has been repaired–there was some water damage, a large crack, and a big hole through to the outside where there was an old fireplace insert. They were able to match the old brick pretty closely, although the new bricks aren’t quite as big, so the mortar lines are a bit thicker. Next pictures are the bathroom mid-renovation. The tub is in, the tile is almost done for the shower, and the floor tile just needs grout. The rest of the house is coming along as well…the walls and ceiling have new texture(covers old repairs and makes everything look newer and more modern). I was a bit skeptical at first, but now I think it really looks great. The ceiling has been painted a pure white, which has brightened up the whole house. They will finish the last of the ceiling and paint the walls on Monday. We have chosen a very soft beige for the entire house. With white doors, trim, fixtures, and counters, it should look clean and modern when everything is complete. More pictures to come…

New Camera

Posted by Cynthia

I have been looking for a new camera for myself, and I finally decided on the Canon PowerShot A570 IS from buydig.com. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but with free shipping and no sales tax, it was really a good deal. This camera got great reviews, and shouldn’t be too difficult for me to use. Now I will have a camera with me wherever I go, so I can take lots more pictures!!

House Painted

BeforeFront During Back During Back Painted Front painted

Goto House Renovation Gallery

Here are some photos of the outside of the house. The first one is the “before” shot–taken when we first arrived. Then there are shots of the back-prep done, not painted; and the front-some paint on. The last two show the finished product. The back is a little hard to see because of the angle and the lighting, but that was the best I could get. The whole house is a gray with some blue accent in the front, and white trim. The white will stand out a little more when the gutters are put on–they will be white, too. Chimney work is next, then gutters, and the outside will be done!!

A Day Off, Then Back To Work

Posted by Cynthia

We have been working here at the house for more than two weeks straight so yesterday we went shopping. I am looking for an inexpensive digital camera for myself so I don’t have to use Kevins, but we got to the mall and never quite made it to Wal-Mart to look at cameras. We(my Mom and I) scoured the clearance racks at Macys and Pennys during their big 4th of July sale. The sale had started a few days before so the racks were picked through fairly well, but we still found a few things that we didn’t need!!

It is quite warm today here in Seattle, so we are working on some outdoor projects, as well as geting the inside ready for painting. We are expecting the outside painter sometime today, and the inside painters will be here tomorrow. While they are working, we will just be in the way, so we are hard at work today. Hopefully once the whole house is painted, the hardwood floors can be refinished, the tile can go in, and it will start looking like a whole different house!!
