We worked 10 - 7 today, and since most of the Memorial Weekend crowd won’t show up until this evening, we worked on the equipment for the snack shack. We took the little pizza oven apart and sprayed it with oven cleaner then power washed it, then we did the same with the autofry unit we will be using. We got the tables placed where we wanted them, and a plumber came out and got the two sinks installed and working. It is finally starting to look like a kitchen. We also have two used freezers that need a good cleaning before we can use them, but I only got about half way done with that before our evening jobs started.
At around 4:30 , Kevin had to go and set up the laser maze, while I was scheduled in the office. We had sweated all day long cleaning equipment, and now I had to go and greet arriving campers. At least it was nice and cool in the office. Kevin had to stay out in the heat. There were hundreds of people to get checked in and placed in their sites, but the policy here is that people have to prepay their entire holiday stay, so the check in process is simple. They are given a waiver to fill out for the water park, a pass for their car(s), and wrist bands to wear. It still took around eight people to get check in done, as well as rent out the golf carts, sell store items, and whatever else needed doing in the office. It seemed to go smoothly from my point of view, although there were a few people who had reserved specific sites, and they had been changed for one reason or another, and a few packets that had not been made up. But all in all, considering that everyone here is fairly new, it went really well.

Today we got up and sat outside for a little while, then we headed towards Houston to go shopping. We stopped at a Target and picked up some cat food and a brush for the cat, a nice set of 450 thread count sheets (which we needed), and some other stuff, then went to Costco, which was farther away than Sam’s Club, but we wanted to check it out. We bought some stew meat, some pork ribs, some hot dogs and buns, some shorty socks for me to wear with my work shoes, some water and Gatorade, and a few other things. Then it was off to Kroger for the rest of our groceries. This was our first time in a Kroger store, but it is your typical chain grocery. The grocery store that is close to the park (still about ten minutes away) is old and they had the worst produce I have ever seen. We decided we would try very hard to never shop there again. So we made a list of what we wanted to have for dinner for the next week and what we needed to get. We got everything on our list except pickles (because they did not have the kind I wanted) and the doormat (we didn’t see one at Target that we liked). Of course we got some things that were not on the list, but at least now we can cook some meals for the next week or so. When we got home, we put the groceries away and I started some laundry. We have a washer/dryer in the coach, but the loads it can do are tiny and very slow, so since we get $10 worth of free laundry, I do it in the laundry room. It is way faster and doesn’t heat up the coach. We are having the hot dogs we got at Costco for dinner, so I don’t really have to cook anything tonight, just heat up. Nice and easy…

It was hot today, so I didn’t want to do anything. I did do some dishes and vacuumed the coach and cleaned out the freezer and Kevin washed the CR-V and did a few things to the coach, but most of the day we sat inside and watched TV. I have a bunch of shows TiVOed, but I can only watch them when the cat is not meowing to go out. Today it was too hot to be out during the day, so I watched a lot of TV. Once the sun went down, we all went outside and sat there until it was dark. I read some, walked the cat some, and just sat there most of the time. It is nice when the sun is down if it is not too humid, but it was very humid this evening. Even just sitting outside, the sweat was running down my nose. Not very pleasant, but the cat insists on being outside and he can’t be out by himself, at least not for very long…

When we signed in for work today, there was a styrofoam cup sitting on the counter with our names on it. There were keys to four of the big two-bedroom cabins in it. We took that to mean that we were cleaning cabins today. We got our golf cart and our cleaning supplies and headed out to the cabins. It took us right about four hours to complete cleaning on four cabins. I do the bathroom while Kevin is cleaning windows, then he does the stove and microwave while I do the fridge, the sink, the coffee pot, and the counters. Then I start sweeping while he checks the A/C, the lighting, the smoke detectors, the TV, and the front porch table. He then finishes the sweeping of the front room and the patio while I start to mop. While I finish the mopping, he is loading up the supplies and opening the next unit. Not too bad when working as a team
After lunch, we checked back in to see what was needed, and there were four more keys in our cup. Boo. Turns out, those four keys were for some of the newly finished cabins that will be rented this weekend for the first time. All we had to do was check them over and make sure that they were OK to be rented out. Some of them were missing some equipment (like a trash can or a dish draining rack), the A/C was not working on one (which we handed off to the maintenance man), and all of them needed some touch up cleaning of the sinks and the floors. They hardly took any time at all, so when we were done with the first four we were assigned, we went ahead and finished the last three that had been assigned to someone else. (She was already busy on another project and we still had some time.)
That basically finished our day, so we signed out. The owners arrived right as we were finishing up, so we told Jan, the manager, that if he needed to talk to us about the snack shack they could come get us. They never did, but we wanted to be available if he had questions or comments.

We found out from the Hunt Brothers reps that there was a gas station about 13 miles from here that served their product, so we drove out there to try it. We ordered a whole pizza–they only make a 12 inch–one half lotsa meat and the other half pepperoni, bacon, and mushrooms. Considering that the crust, sauce, and cheese are frozen, it is a fairly good product. It is meant to cook from frozen in six minutes, so it didn’t take long to receive, and the crust was tasty. The sauce is a bit bland for our taste, but that is true of a lot of the pizzas we have tried. We are happy to see that it is a quality product at a reasonable price. It should go well here when it is busy and hot and no one wants to cook, especially since the nearset restaurant is around ten miles away.

Today was a work day, but no one really knew what they wanted us to do. We knew that the reps from the pizza we are going to sell would be in the park at around 9, so we wanted to be sure to meet with them. We decided to take some cabin keys and begin cleaning one. We were radioed that they were ready for us before we finished cleaning the first cabin, so we left everything there and went to the snack shack for the meeting. They are from Hunt Brothers pizza, a chain that sells their products in convenience stores and other small locations. They looked at what we have and suggested what we needed to get opened. They want to make sure that customers know they are receiving Hunt Brothers Pizza and not just some no-name thing, so they require a certain amount of signage and branding. They told the managers and us what they thought the owners should order, and we made a list.
After the Hunt Brothers guys left, we finished cleaning our one cabin, then we took some time to go through the snack shack and make a “what we need to get this thing opened” list that the manager faxed to the owners. We also made a list of possible menu items we thought we could sell with the equipment we will have, and a list of groceries we would need to serve those items. That took the rest of our day, although we did sign out an hour early. They are pretty flexible about hours here–if they don’t have something important for us to do, we can pretty much sign out when we think we are done for the day.
Now we are just waiting on approval from the owners on what is needed, and the snack shack we are supposed to run for the summer should be open in no time…

We were supposed to be off on Friday, but we were asked if we could work a few hours Friday night and we agreed. I was put to work in the office handing out the miniature golf clubs and balls, renting out the golf carts to campers, and helping ring up store purchases at the register. A lot of people were coming in to register for the weekend so I got to see how all of that stuff worked, but I didn’t do any of the actual checking in. While I was in the office, Kevin got to run the laser maze game they have here. They charge $3 for a try at the laser maze, and some kids can do it in a matter of seconds. The last three pictures are of the laser maze.
On Saturday, we both worked 10 am - 7 pm. We did the same jobs that we had done the previous evening. There were a ton of kids staying here this weekend–two girl scout troops, one boy scout troop, plus all of the families. The park was nearly full. We sold a ton of candy and ice cream, as well as some Yogi Bear souvenirs. Most of the golf carts had already been rented out the previous evening, but there was a steady stream of people checking out and returning the golf clubs and balls for the putt putt course. Kevin had quite a few customers at the laser maze as well.
Sunday we worked 8 am - 5 pm. I got a little more training on the reservations computers, but answering the phone is still tricky because I don’t have very many answers to questions that people have about the park and the accommodations. Kevin had the laser maze open in the morning and did trash pick up in the afternoon…
