Christmas Day In Key Largo

by Cynthia on December 25, 2009

We spent the afternoon at John Pennekamp State Park.  First we drove down to the end of Key Largo and onto Islamirada.  We didn’t want to spend the entire time driving, so we turned back and just went to the State Park.  The main draw to the park is the snorkeling, kayaking, and glass-bottom boat tours.  If we want to do any of that, we will have to go back – we didn’t plan on that type of thing today, so we just wandered around a bit.  There was a trail into the trees

it wasn’t very long, and it actually had some damage so we couldn’t do the whole loop, but it was kind of a neat way to look into the swamps.

I tried to get some pictures of some of the birds, but by the time I switched lenses they were all flying away.  There was a small swimming beach, and there is a gift shop, a snack bar, and some nice outside dining space.  It said reserved for concessions patrons only, but it was mostly empty so we sat there for awhile.  I took some pictures of the birds waiting to get fed, as well as some big chunks of coral and a few other things.

As we were driving around earlier, we kind of took note of what was open and what was not open.  None of the touristy gift-type shops were open, but there were some restaurants to pick from.  There was a pizza place, Waffle House, Wendy’s, and a few local places here and there, but we decided on Wendy’s, although we were seriously considering the Waffle House.  First time I ever saw a Wendy’s open on Christmas day, but they were pretty busy, and it was good…
