Tuesday Afternoon

We went to Cypress for the last time today. We decided to go to Chili’s for lunch because I was in the mood for Mexican, but Kevin didn’t want to go to a Mexican restaurant. Then we got there and they had a soup and salad lunch that came with chips and salsa, so I decided to get that instead. Kevin got a steak and ribs combo. We shared the chips because they brought me a huge basketful of them. Then I got salad and a bowl of broccoli cheddar soup. It was supposed to be endless soup and salad, but with all of those chips there was no way I could have eaten more than one bowl of each.

After lunch, we went to HEB–mainly because I wanted to get my Greek yogurt. We needed milk and bread, but we really didn’t need much food. We ended up buying a bunch of snacks. Then we stopped at the outlet mall on the way back. We wanted to get some Auntie Anne’s pretzels–Tuesday used to be dollar pretzel day, but I guess they don’t do that any more. We got two pretzels that we will eat tonight instead of dinner since we had such a big lunch.

We got back and Kevin decided to wash the car. I went and took a picture of the new office being constructed. It seems to be coming along nicely. Here is also a picture of the cat watching a squirrel. It is a bit dark, but I thought it was funny.

Last Day of Housekeeping!!

Posted by Cynthia

Today was our last Monday of work, and our last day of cleaning cabins. We did about the same as last week–nine cabins in six hours. There were plenty more that needed cleaning, but we were done. The rest can be cleaned throughout the week since there are no rentals until this weekend.

We have the next three days off, so we will be mostly ready to leave by Thursday afternoon. We are still going to do our grocery shopping tomorrow, but we really have nothing else to do in town so it will be a quick trip.

We had a long, busy day today. The park is pretty much full this weekend, so we were busy at the snack bar most of the day. We had one slow hour between 5 and 6 while the costume parade and best costume voting was going on, but other than that we were busy all day.

So we were told when we were hired that Halloween was a busy time for the park and people really got into decorating their sites/cabins while they were here. We had no idea how carried away some people would get decorating. These were taken Friday afternoon and after work Friday night. I had planned on getting some more on Saturday, but by the time we ate dinner I was just too tired to walk around the campground again to take pictures.

First the ones taken in daylight Friday afternoon:

Then some more taken after dark, both with the flash:

Night Halloween III Night Halloween With Flash

And with no flash:

Night Halloween Night Halloween II Cabins Halloween Halloween Night IV

There were definitely more RV’s with decorations than cabins, but judging wasn’t until Saturday night, so that may have changed. There were some Halloween activities these past few weekends as well, but no one really started getting into it until this weekend. It should really be good next weekend–the actual Halloween!!

Counting Down the Days

Well this has been a typical week so far, even though we are starting to get ready to leave. We went shopping as usual on Tuesday. We did pretty much nothing on Wednesday. I did take these pictures while I was out walking the cat. There are butterflies around here constantly, but I never seem to have the camera when they are this close. I just waited patiently this time and they came back.

Butterfly II Butterfly

These two are of the same butterfly–just in different poses.

So today is Thursday and we have about nine days left before we leave. Two more weekends of work. I guess the park is fully booked for both weekends, though, so we should have some busy last few days.

This morning, Kevin worked on getting the last part of the coach waxed while I did some inside stuff. There is not a whole lot for us to do to get ready to go. Most of the inside work is stashing the stuff that is on the dresser, counters, and table as well as moving the stuff that we store in the corner under the steering wheel and driver’s seat. We won’t be moving any of that until the day before we leave. A lot of the loose stuff just goes on the bed while we travel. Yes, it does have to be moved every night so we can sleep, but we just don’t have the cupboard space for everything, and it is better than having stuff all over the floor.

Not really much to report this week–just getting excited to get going at this point…

Super Long Work Day

As we were checking in for work Saturday morning, the managers asked us if we could be night security after our shift in the snack bar. The people who usually do it had to be out of town this weekend and since practically everyone else helps out with the haunted house, we were the only ones who were available. We thought about it for a minute and decided it would be okay to do it once. It is not that much work–just ride around in a golf cart and make sure people are not too loud after quiet hours which start at 10 pm. So we worked our 10:30-8 shift in the snack bar. We had our regular Saturday night pizza dinner, then we went back to work and we worked from 8:30-midnight. It was a very long day, but at least we got to sit for the second part. And the job was quite easy. We had to tell one group that eight people were too much for one golf cart, we told a few people that they needed to turn off their music, and we had to try to quiet down one large group. There was about 15 people in a big circle between two trailers, and even at 11:30, they were louder than we would have liked, but they were trying, and they didn’t have any really close neighbors, so we just made sure they knew we were watching them. We finished our shift at midnight, and I just hope they didn’t get loud again after they stopped seeing us drive by. Aside from that group, the park was almost completely quiet by around eleven, so it was a fairly easy night.

We have pretty much decided our route back to Yuma. We will leave here the morning of the 3rd and hit Texas’ oldest brewery about 90 minutes Southwest. Then we will arrive in San Antonio, where we will be for around four nights. Then we will head Northwest and take two days to get to Carlsbad, New Mexico where we will visit Carlsbad Caverns for two days. Depending on what we find to see at each place, we will spend a day or so in El Paso, TX, Tombstone, AZ, and Tucson, AZ. We may be a day or so late for our November 15 reservation in Yuma, but we will decide that along the way. Since we sort of had to rush to get here in the spring I want to make sure that we see a few things on our way back.

This was our first weekend serving beer in the snack bar. The owners applied for a liquor license in May, and it was finally approved to start selling last week. We have two taps in the snack bar, and they are selling package beer in the store. It went okay–we sold maybe fifty glasses of beer. And about 12 of those were to the park managers. They came over Sunday evening and drank and talked with us the last three hours we were open…

Monday was a holiday so they wanted us to be open for the people who were staying. We were only open for about two hours, because there was literally no one left in the park after about noon. We did sell one pizza :) After we did that, we did a few chores, then took it easy.

Tuesday we went to town. Even though it was close to noon, we decided we wanted breakfast. We went to IHOP and we both got pancakes with hash browns and scrambled eggs. Kevin got sausage and I got bacon. It was all good, except my hash browns. They were dripping oil. I ate the crunchy part on top, then just concentrated on my pancakes. After breakfast, Kevin dropped me off at Target, then he went to get a haircut. Then he went to Lowe’s and got an inexpensive mini blind for the bathroom to try to keep the sun out. The bathroom is easily the warmest room in the coach, so we are hoping that will help. I got some stuff at Target, and was just finishing up when Kevin found me. We left there then went to Sam’s Club for a few things, then to Randall’s for groceries. They make really good biscuits in their bakery–that is the main reason I wanted to go there. We looked around, but I couldn’t find any biscuits, but when I asked the baker, she said they could have some in around ten minutes. We finished our shopping, then went back to the bakery and sure enough they had hot fresh biscuits ready for me. Pretty cool.

By the time we got home and got everything unloaded, it was around 5:00, so I had some leftovers and a biscuit (or two) and Kevin made himself a TV dinner. I was walking the cat and I noticed that our neighbor’s hummingbird feeder actually had hummingbirds using it, so I went back and got the camera and took this picture

Hummingbird

I tried to get a few more, but they didn’t turn out quite as good as this one. Then the birds flew away. I waited a bit to see if they would come back, but they didn’t while I was standing there.

We are off the next two days as well, but we don’t have any plans. We have pretty much seen everything around here that we wanted to see, so we are just looking towards our next adventure…

23 Days to Go

Posted by Cynthia

We haven’t done much to report since I last posted. We worked Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in the snack bar. Pretty normal weekend, but not all that busy. The cabins were mostly full but not that many RVs, aside from the monthly renters. Monday we cleaned cabins. We did five of the smaller ones and three of the bigger ones. Not bad for a six hour day.

Tuesday we were off, so we went into town. We went to Spring Creek BBQ for lunch. Kevin got their brisket for the third time, but I decided to get the chicken. I really don’t like skin-on, bone-in chicken, but it looked really good today. And it was. It practically melted in my mouth. Kevin gave me some of his brisket, and I gave him some chicken.

Since the sides are all-you-can-eat, I got a lot of coleslaw and mac and cheese, so I didn’t eat my chicken thigh. Kevin can have it for lunch tomorrow. After lunch, we went to the dollar store, even though we didn’t really need anything. We found a few things, then we went to Wal-Mart for groceries. We had only gone to the local grocery last week, so we needed a lot of stuff. We spent nearly $70 on groceries…

Wednesday Kevin went out and washed the motor home. He had done about half of it a month or so ago, so today he did the other half. We did a little house work and laundry, but otherwise we just relaxed. Today we have no plans, so I will have plenty of time to watch TV :)
